When Joyce Uhlir isn’t fishing you will see her with a pen and paper, capturing the scenes that she surrounds herself with. Lacing the paper with paintings that look a lot like words, she ends her day with a smile and a poem to fine tune later. Her first book, Mysterious Light, was published in 2010 by Blue Light Press.

Mysterious Light:

"In Mysterious Light, Joyce Uhlir expands her gifts of observation and creativity, as an artist, to the art of writing poetry. When she combines her artistic skills with her love and appreciation of nature, the results are stunning.

Featured poem:

MYSTERIOUS LIGHT

Leaves painted viridian and oxide green
overlap at the top of poplars and pines,
leafing over the forest
in coverlets of darkness.

Eddies of lemon and gold
laser through tops of barren branches
onto the forest floor.
A pileated woodpecker raps for attention,
his red head awash in sunlight.

I am drawn towards this luminary,
where mosquitoes, nits and butterflies
flutter in a glistening pillar of light
reaching to the sun.

Breaching the edge between dark and light
I am drawn inside
to bathe in its buttery glow,
my hair changing into golden threads

Sweet scents of lily milk and honey
rise from beneath my feet
inside this yellow flame
where tears no longer find a place to cry.
